YKK Zippers: Concentrate – Dominate

You’ve most likely come across a YKK Zipper on at least one of your clothes if not all.
YKK (far too long to print on a zipper) stands for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha. A Japanese company that manufactures almost half the zippers on earth – more than 7 billion a year.

Founded by Tadao Yoshida in Tokyo in 1934, the young Yoshida was a tinkerer who designed his own customized zipper machines when he wasn’t satisfied with existing production methods. One by one, Yoshida brought every stage of the zipper making process in house. From smelting the brass, developing its own polyester, spinning and twisting its own thread, weaving and colour dyeing cloth for the zip tapes and moulds its own zipper teeth. Might I include the boxes the zippers are shipped in? Piece of cake right?

With every tiny detail handled under YKK’s roof, outside variables get eliminated and the company can assure consistent quality and speed of production.

A great example of focus, a strategy of Concentrate-Dominate using Vertical Integration.
